CONTROL YOUR FOOD

Do you know why I don't like going out to eat?

  • The fact that dinner out costs more than a grocery trip?  maybe
  • Portions are large and food goes to waste?  possibly
  • A lot more fat and calories?  probable
  • Or.....the fact that I can't control the quality of ingredients and really have no idea what is actually going into my food?  BINGO!
Now, don't get me wrong......I do enjoy date night and the occasional dinner out especially for the experience but not on a frequent level.

I prefer to control what ingredients are actually going into my meal, where they came from, and how they were grown.  Here's how I Keep It Real and control much of what's going into my mouth.

  1. First, I started a mini garden (my backyard is very small) and grow what my family enjoys and what grows well in our climate.  I chose: arugula, mint, rosemary, cilantro, green onion, and am trying to grow a lemon tree (that is going to take some time).
  2. I use my herbs in everything: arugula in salads and sandwiches, green onions in all sorts of dishes and as garnishes, and the other herbs go into my uniquely flavored breads that I have started making and will be available to public.....coming soon!
  3. The last and most important thing I do is compost.  Composting is one of the most important actions we can take to help our environment and ourselves.  Composting reduces waste, reduces toxins in environment, is a great soil ammender, and recycles nutrients back into environment.  I use my compost in my garden to add rich organic matter and nutrients to keep my soil healthy.
It's not hard to get started.  Buy a small bucket and place on kitchen counter and fill with compostable material and when that gets full, take outside and fill a much larger container that stays there.  You don't need anything fancy (although, there are many fancy ones on the market).  You just need outdoor space, sunshine, and a positive attitude :)
Follow Miss Maria keeping it Real for more information on compostable material.
